Around Cornwall on CB125F Day 9 – Penzance to Tintagel

Yet another beautiful day 🙂 Start as usual, not too early but just right at 9am after a good, home made breakfast, I left Penzance for Tintagel.

Interestingly, forecast for today was as good as it gets, sunny, light winds and a bit of clouds for another pleasant and warm day. You can’t ask for more 🙂 Only 71 miles to go but what a route. Mainly, I was following the most costal roads, whenever possible.

Newquay

The best part begins in Newquay, (on the map OYO Godolphin Arms Hotel) and continues up to the Tintagel. I thought this hotel can be a good place to stop for break but it was closed. The owner gave me directions to a cafe near the beach, a Gwenna Teahouse. It turned out as a very good place to stop. Lovely and friendly stuff, tasty coffee and cakes.

Originally, I planned a bit different route, slightly further away from shore, somehow shorter, and this is reflected on the map. But by all means, please follow the costal road, as I did, including B3276 up to Padstow, then A389, shortly on A39 and off towards B3314. After Dunree Caravan park take a narrow local road on the left side of the fork via Treknow leading to Tintagel. Views are spectacular. This route was recommended to me by a friendly chap from Gwenna, and I was very grateful for this tip.

Tintagel

Depending on time of your arrival you may be able to see Marlin’s Cave, where the Tintagel Castle is. It is only accessible at the low water. I had this opportunity and enough time to drop my bike at Pendrin and walk to the cove and the see the cave. One of many impressive natural features of the Cornish shores.

Obviously I was about to visit the castle but my slot was for the next day. This gave me more time to explore the area without rushing. Anyway, I would not be able to see the cave next day – it was flooded. More details about my visit to the castle will be in the Day 10.

It took me just over 3 hours to cover 71 miles of pleasant ride along beautiful Cornish coast, including coffee break in Newquay. Here is a link to the initial map.
